Heather Kane

  • Mom of two kids with needs
  • Struggled with medical costs
  • Speaking out for the needs of medically fragile children

When Heather's first son was born premature, her family had private insurance through an employer, but it did not cover specialty care in the hospital, including the neonatologist. The bill was $110,000. While they were saved from declaring bankruptcy, they paid tens of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket.  With the birth of a second son, who is also developmentally disabled, monthly costs for everything from therapies to medically necessary liquid nutrition are extensive. After persevering to get the boys covered under Medicaid to supplement their private insurance, Heather's been urging lawmakers to focus on the unique needs of medically fragile children and the stark realities of being underinsured.
