A transformative partnership advancing the health of moms and babies through health education, community engagement, and clinical impact

Each year, HCA Healthcare cares for more new families than any other health system, delivering more than 212,000 babies. Data from these births is used to form insights to help improve prenatal, natal, and postnatal care. Our national partnership with HCA Healthcare is rooted in working together to leverage combined clinical data, innovative research, and health education to help improve maternal and infant outcomes in the US. At the local level, HCA Healthcare hospitals also demonstrate their commitment to the health of moms and babies by supporting and participating in March of Dimes’ signature fundraising campaigns in their communities, such as March for Babies and Signature Chefs.
Maternal health education: It Starts With Mom
In 2024, HCA Healthcare expanded their partnership with March of Dimes to include supporting our It Starts With Mom® maternal health education platform, which equips women with critical health information and resources for every stage of their pregnancy journey, from preconception to postpartum. This includes support of our Low Dose, Big Benefits™ campaign, which aims to mitigate the adverse effects of preeclampsia in at-risk pregnant individuals by increasing awareness of using low dose aspirin to reduce the negative impacts of preeclampsia.
Community engagement: March for Babies
For over a decade, HCA Healthcare employees have participated in volunteerism and fundraising efforts for several of our local March for Babies campaigns, where hospital colleagues come together as a team to raise funds and walk together alongside their community to support our mission. In 2022, HCA Healthcare scaled their support for March for Babies beyond the local level to become a leading national partner of our signature campaign, which mobilizes more than 80 communities across the nation in support of healthy moms and strong babies.
Clinical impact: Consumer and provider education
In recent years, our partnership has focused on improving maternal mortality and morbidity outcomes in the US, where pregnancy-related deaths have more than doubled over the past 30 years. Together, we identified two areas expected to have the greatest clinical impact on reducing negative maternal health outcomes: improved postpartum discharge education and lowering non-medically necessary Cesarean births.
To educate moms and families on the crucial importance of postpartum health, March of Dimes and HCA Healthcare developed postpartum discharge videos in English and Spanish that highlight the serious issues of hemorrhage, hypertension, and postpartum depression that can occur during this time. In a quick video format, we emphasize the importance of postpartum health to families transitioning home from the hospital, and encourage moms to attend their postpartum doctor visits. These videos are shared within all HCA Healthcare delivering hospitals.
In an effort to reduce the rate of Cesarean deliveries among low-risk, first-time moms, we joined forces to examine provider culture and highlight clinical best practices. March of Dimes and HCA Healthcare collaborated to capture physician-identified approaches for effective reduction of non-medically indicated NTSV Cesarean births, which could improve outcomes for moms and babies. Using this feedback, we co-produced a peer physician education video where physicians shared best practices to reduce non-medically indicated NTSV Cesarean births.
