Statement from March of Dimes President and CEO Stacey D. Stewart on Key House Committee Vote on Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act

July 17, 2019

“Today’s vote by the House Energy and Commerce Committee to advance the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2019 (HR 2507) marks another important milestone in reauthorizing federal screening programs that save or improve the lives of more than 12,000 babies born each year.

We commend members of the committee for taking this important step to protect the health of infants across the country, and call for an immediate vote in the House of Representatives before programs expire on September 30.

No child should suffer or die when there is a means to quickly and accurately identify and treat their condition. Congress must act now to reauthorize vital programs that help prevent severe and permanent disabilities through early treatment.”
