Did You Know?

The U.S. is the most dangerous country in the developed world to give birth in

2 women die every day from pregnancy related causes in the U.S. and black women have maternal death rates 3x higher than women of other races

Women of color are 50% more likely to experience pre term birth than white women and their children can face a 130% higher infant death rate.

In the 2020 Report Card, we highlight the latest key indicators to describe and improve maternal and infant health in the United States (U.S.). Preterm birth and its complications are the second largest contributor to infant death in the U.S., and preterm birth rates have been increasing for five years. Prematurity grades are assigned by comparing the 2019 preterm birth grade to March of Dimes’ goal of 8.1 percent by 2020.

Rates of maternal death and morbidity continue to be unacceptably high in the U.S. Maternal morbidity, social determinants of health, availability of state level health insurance policy and the availability of surveillance and research data affect the health and survival of both mom and baby.

About March of Dimes

March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies. We support research, lead programs and provide education and advocacy so that every baby can have the best possible start. Building on a successful 80-year legacy of impact and innovation, we empower every mom and every family.

The U.S. has the highest maternal death rate among the worlds most developed nations with black women's maternal death rates 3x higher than women of other races, are 50% more likely to experience pre-term birth than other races and their children can face a 130 percent higher infant death rate. March of Dimes has two clear goals: End preventale maternal health risks and death and End preventable pre-term birth and infant death.

March of Dimes is fighting the biggest health threats to moms and babies by:

  • Advocating at the federal and state levels for funding and legislation that put the health priorities of moms and babies first.
  • Working with the medical community to improve the health care women receive.
  • Funding research at our six Prematurity Research Centers (PRC), including our recently established European PRC at Imperial College London, to create innovative collaborations that will accelerate improvements to the health of moms and babies for generations to come.
  • Seeking answers through social science
  • Providing families with resources and programs as well as educating moms before, during and after pregnancy to ensure that families have the best possible start.
  • Uniting local communities and partnering with organizations and companies, bringing together problem solvers, families and support systems to inspire change.
