7.  The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed nations, marked by significant racial and socioeconomic disparities. For example, Black women are 60% more likely to have preeclampsia than White women (https://hcup-us.ahrq.gov/reports/statbriefs/sb222-Preeclampsia-Eclampsia-Delivery-Trends.pdf). This is due to historical inequities and unequal treatment. Furthermore, Preeclampsia and Hypertensive Disorders affecting 1 in 8 pregnancies, with cases increasing by 74% between 2015 and 2022. Black women are 1.5 times more likely to develop hypertensive disorders (Source: National Center for Health Statistics, 2022 natality data).
