2020 March of Dimes Report Cards

For thirteenth year, March of Dimes presents report cards on preterm birth. This report card has evolved over the years and now encompasses many maternal and infant health topics.

The report card maintains its most influential aspect of a grade on preterm birth for the nation and each state. These grades, based solely on the preterm birth rate, compare the preterm birth rate to the March of Dimes 2020 goal for prematurity (8.1%). Grades for the 2020 report cards utilize the 2019 natality data from National Center for Health Statistics.

The 2020 Report Card contains measures that examine infant health. These include preterm birth rate, preterm birth rate by race/ethnicity and preterm birth rates for the city with the greatest number of births. For the second year, we present data on social determinants of health. These include poverty, lack of health insurance and inadequate prenatal care. As in 2019, we also present data on the average cost of preterm birth and Medicaid expansion.

New to the report cards in 2020 is the addition of information for states in the following areas Medicaid extension recent actions, Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRC) and Perinatal Quality Collaborative (PQC).
