Our daughter Audrey was the best Christmas gift we had ever received. She arrived happy and healthy, and Eric and I could not have been more thrilled. So when we found out we were expecting our second child a couple of years later, we assumed it would be another smooth ride. I mean, I did everything “right” -- vitamins, nutrition, check-ups, etc., but things did not go as planned. There were a couple of small bumps in the road in the second trimester, and at 30 weeks during a routine ultrasound, we were informed that our son would be born without his right hand, likely due to a condition known as amniotic band syndrome.
It’s fair to say that we panicked. Our reaction seems so silly now, but at the time we were so sad that our little boy would face a physical challenge, and we were so afraid that we would not know what to do. We made an impromptu decision to travel to Ohio and tell my family the news so we could be surrounded by our loved ones. During that trip, a thousand miles from home, Andrew arrived 9 weeks early.
We were so fortunate because he and I both received excellent medical care; care that is available because of research supported and championed by the March of Dimes. I received steroids before he was born to help support his lungs. Andrew was also given surfactant therapy, which was discovered by research funded by the March of Dimes, which helped his breathe with his underdeveloped lungs. Additionally, the medical staff encouraged us to spend time in “kangaroo care” every day and it dramatically improved his health. His incredible nursing and therapist staff were aware of and sensitive to the special developmental needs of a premature baby while caring for him. During our entire 6 week stay in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (which took place in 2 different states after a medical transport flight home), we were supported by information, education, and resources provided by the March of Dimes.
So now, as a doctor and researcher with a goal of improving the health of all babies, and as the very fortunate parents of an amazing preemie, we want to give back and support the March of Dimes by participating in the 34th Annual Night Moves on September 19th! We believe wholeheartedly in the mission of the March of Dimes’ mission of giving every baby the healthiest possible start.
