About us
Dr. Margaret C. Freda "Saving Babies, Together®"Award
The March of Dimes Margaret Comerford Freda “Saving Babies, Together®” Award was established to honor long-time March of Dimes National Nurse Advisory Council Chair, volunteer, and friend, Dr. Margaret Comerford Freda. This award encourages nursing research that will contribute to clinical practices that improve the health and quality of life for newborns. The award is provided to an experienced investigator whose research reflects a commitment to the promote best start for all babies.
The 2020 recipient of the award is Joanna Carrega, PhD, Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of North Georgia. Dr. Carrega received a $7,000 grant for her research proposal, Maternal Stress, Sleep and Breastfeeding Outcomes Among First-time Mothers.
“March of Dimes congratulates Dr. Carrega, this year’s award recipient, and looks forward to the findings of her research on the impact of maternal stress and sleep on breastfeeding outcomes,” said March of Dimes President and CEO Stacey D. Stewart. “In the U.S., most new moms will start breastfeeding but find it difficult to do so for at least six months, which healthcare providers recommend for optimal newborn outcomes. Dr. Carrega’s research will provide important insights into the factors that impact this experience and help us to better support breastfeeding mothers to continue breastfeeding their newborns.”
