Statement of Stacey D. Stewart, President, March of Dimes on release of the President's fiscal year 2018 budget proposal

May 24, 2017

The March of Dimes released the following statement from President Stacey D. Stewart regarding the President’s budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2018:

“As an organization that has worked for nearly 80 years to ensure that every mother and every baby has the healthiest start in life, the March of Dimes is dismayed that the President’s budget proposes cuts and changes that would cripple our nation’s efforts to promote maternal and child health.

“The proposed budget would eliminate or nearly destroy a vast range of programs that support the health and wellbeing of women, children, and families.  Indiscriminate cuts have been proposed to programs large and small, from Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program to newborn screening and emergency medical services for children. Programs that have been established with bipartisan support, and supported fully by both Republican and Democratic Administrations, have been proposed for cuts.

“This budget proposal does not reflect our nation’s priorities.  We hope that all Americans can agree that promoting healthy pregnancies and healthy babies is essential to the future of our country.  The March of Dimes urges Congress to support continued investment in our families and our future.”
