STATEMENT FROM MARCH OF DIMES PRESIDENT AND CEO STACEY D. STEWART ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF NEWBORN SCREENING SAVES LIVES REAUTHORIZATION ACT OF 2019

July 25, 2019

“March of Dimes applauds last night’s vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to advance the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2019 (H.R. 2507), thereby bringing us one step closer to ensuring that every one of the more than 4 million infants born in the U.S. each year continues to undergo this critical, life-saving screening.

“With the early detection afforded by newborn screening, affected infants receive prompt treatment, which can prevent permanent disability, developmental delay and even death.

“As the leading organization in maternal and child health, we strongly advocated for the bill’s passage and the need for lawmakers to renew federal programs to protect the health of infants. We now urge House and Senate members to work together to swiftly reconcile any issues between their bills before these critical programs expire in September.”
