MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center’s Dr. Fernando V. Mena Honored by March of Dimes for Commitment to Families and Children
Baltimore, MD | Thursday, September 21, 2017
The March of Dimes Foundation – Maryland Market has named Fernando V. Mena, MD, FAAP, chief of Neonatology at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center as its 2017 Medical Honoree, recognizing his dedication and passion for caring for critically ill babies and their families. The March of Dimes will present the award to Dr. Mena at its annual Signature Chefs Auction on November 16, 2017.
In 2008, Franklin Square Hospital Center was chosen as the first site in Maryland to implement the March of Dimes NICU Family Support program. The hospital was selected because of its strong foundation of family-centered care, the diversity of the population served and the outstanding support of the hospital and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) leadership.
Under the leadership of Dr. Mena, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center recently completed a major renovation of its NICU and now offers state-of-the art private rooms. The new NICU is designed to promote a partnership between families and the entire NICU team. This team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other experts with extensive neonatal training who provide the highest quality and safest patient care in a setting that, in itself, is healing. The March of Dimes has an on-site NICU Family Support Program Coordinator, Erin Fierro. Mrs. Fierro works closely with Dr. Mena, NICU Nurse Manager Gerri Petit and the rest of the multidisciplinary team members, who believe that a baby’s successful journey from critical care to home involves the entire family.
The March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction is a fundraising event featuring more than 25 of the Baltimore area’s premier restaurants and chefs offering their signature dishes for guests to sample. The event is set for November 16, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Harbor East. Reserved Tables can be purchased for $2,500, and individual tickets are $200. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
The annual gala drew more than 400 attendees in 2016. This year’s event is presented by the event chairs, Jedd & Dara Canty. Additional sponsors include MoneyMap Press, University of Maryland Health Plans, and The Nabit Foundation.
