Norfolk, VA, November 17, 2015– WomanCare Centers, PLC has received a grant for $20,650 from the March of Dimes to launch a CenteringPregnancy® project. The grant was made possible by Anthem Foundation and continues a longstanding relationship between Anthem Foundation and March of Dimes. Most recently, in 2012 a $2 million grant helped the March of Dimes provide prenatal care to more than 8,000 woman via CenteringPregnancy ®. The grant to the March of Dimes is part of Anthem Foundation’s ongoing commitment to addressing health disparities and improving public health across the country.

CenteringPregnancy® is an innovative approach to providing prenatal care in groups. All practicing providers at WomanCare Centers are interested in giving their patients a choice in prenatal care. Thanks to the March of Dimes, their care providers will receive training to provide this premier prenatal care for women in the Greater Hamptons Roads.

CenteringPregnancy® combines prenatal health assessment, education and support in a group setting of pregnant women with similar due dates. Women who participate in the CenteringProgram® appreciate that they can be active participants in their own care, get to know other pregnant women, and feel better prepared to make decisions about their pregnancy and births.

This model of care is evidence based to decrease rates of preterm birth and increase care satisfaction. Centering Pregnancy participants also have an increased breastfeeding initiation. Norfolk, Virginia has been designated by the March of Dimes as one of the 100 US cities with the greatest number of births and they experience 11% preterm birth rates compared to Virginia’s state average of 9.2%. The March of Dimes is now promoting CenteringPregnancy® programs because of the potential to reduce preterm birth rates and infant mortality. In partnership with the March of Dimes, WomanCare Centers share these goals and aims to provide premium prenatal care, preparing expectant parents to be active participants in their pregnancies, births, and early parenting experiences.
