Middlebury, CT, January 21, 2016 —

The March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter is pleased to announce that Dr. Magdy Galal, Director of Neonatology of Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, has been named Chair of the 2016 Greater Waterbury March for Babies walk.

March for Babies, the organization’s largest annual fundraising event to support its mission to give every baby a healthy start, will be held at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury on Sunday, May 1.  As Chair, Dr. Galal has pledged to raise awareness and important funding to help babies born prematurely or with birth defects and focus on recruiting new companies to participate and lead the community in making a difference for the health of moms and babies.

March for Babies helps fund lifesaving research and educational programs aimed at helping moms have healthy babies. At the 2015 Greater Waterbury March for Babies walk, more than $100,000 was raised.

Dr. Galal has served as the Director of Neonatology at Saint Mary’s Hospital since 1996, and is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Yale University, School of Medicine.

“In my career, I have seen many premature babies facing significant short term and long term challenges directly related to their premature birth. All of us, as medical staff and community members, need to work harder to decrease the incidence of premature birth both locally in greater Waterbury and nationwide.  Let us give our babies the chance to start strong so they can lead a healthy happy life without lifelong disabilities,” said Dr. Galal.

Dr. Galal will be hosting a March for Babies kickoff celebration on Thursday, February 11 at Saint Mary’s Hospital for members of the community who want to learn more about the March of Dimes. Guests will also meet the 2016 Greater Waterbury Ambassador family, and learn firsthand the importance of the March of Dimes mission to prevent premature birth.  Those interested in attending may RVSP online at
