Birmingham, AL, January 22, 2016 —
The March of Dimes is proud to be a part of the team serving families in UAB Women and Infant Center’s RNICU and CCN. From January - December 2015, we provided:
· 1,350 families with supportive educational materials
· 70 parent education hours (6 classes per month on average.)
· 1,250 Monthly Activity Calendars distributed to inform families
· 760 individual photos taken for families with over 2,000 printed for families
· 2,000+ family members attended social, craft and educational activities.
Families and NICU staff have shared that the materials, education hours and activities provided by the March of Dimes assisted them during their experience while at UAB Hospital. Parents have also expressed their deep appreciation of the parent care kit, as well as how helpful the Baby Journal, Parent book and NICU Glossary were.
Providing Information and Comfort
Each month our program offers a variety of parent education hours and parent activities for families. Parent education hours provide information on a topic that is relevant to their baby’s stay in the NICU or their transition to home. Parent hours are typically led by a NICU or hospital staff person, community professionals or the March of Dimes Specialist.
Topics for our parent education hours have included the following: Development Care, Feeding Your Preterm Baby, Physical Therapy, Safe Sleep, Happiest Baby on the Block, Immunizations, RSV, Kangaroo Care, Safety, Coping, Car Seat Safety, Parent Stories, Post-Partum Depression, Infant Massage, Risk Reduction, and Infection Control
We also offer a wide range of social and supportive opportunities designed to help families to ‘normalize’ the parenting experience during their NICU stay. These activities help families to connect with other NICU parents, acknowledge and celebrate holidays and milestones and receive support and comfort.
