March of Dimes Nevada received a donation of $8,283 today from Caesars Entertainment Corporation. The Las Vegas based organization committed the gift on behalf of Jeff Eichelberger as a reward for his outstanding community service. Eichelberger, Director of Wine –Bally's, Paris, Planet Hollywood, received the National Caesars Award of Excellence.
Jeff, wife Melissa, and daughter Lulu served as 2016 ambassadors for March of Dimes Nevada and continue to support the mission. The couple’s son Robert was born in 2015 at just 30 weeks, weighing less than 2 pounds. Baby Robert faced multiple challenges including defects in his heart, a cyst on his lung, problems with the vascular development in his eyes, and kidney issues. He endured multiple surgeries, including open heart surgery, and held on for 7 months, 10 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sunrise Children’s Hospital. Robert died on August 14.
During the family’s time in the NICU they found strength and support from March of Dimes’ NICU Family Support Program and the skilled medical team at Sunrise Children’s Hospital. During Robert’s hospital stay, Dr. Patricia Ramsay, NICU Medical Director at Sunrise Children’s Hospital and March of Dimes Board Member, and Jeff and Melissa developed a connection and bond that has continued to this day.
After Robert’s death, Jeff turned his grief into action and began volunteering every week at the hospital where he lost his son. Additionally, he and Melissa have created a support group for families in the NICU with the hope of helping others going through the emotional and stressful experience.
March of Dimes fights for the health of every mom and baby. According to Jeff, “’It takes a village to raise a child’ is a well-known African proverb, but to allow each family’s village that opportunity, we need to send healthy babies home. Globally, 1 in 10 mothers will experience a preterm birth, along with the fear and uncertainty that experience brings. March of Dimes is working hard to both bring attention to this issue and to help find solutions for the future. As a village, we should help March of Dimes give our babies that support.”
Pam Carlston, executive director at March of Dimes Nevada said, “Jeff and Melissa continue to turn a devastating loss into a meaningful way to honor their son’s memory. We are humbled by their generosity and thank them on behalf of all moms and babies.”
