- Used medicaid to cover expenses of her first child
- Testified to get the reauthorization of CHIP
- Shared her story again to get the CHIP bill passed
Kathy Paz was a student expecting her first child. And then Alex was born too soon. Kathy had extensive medical expenses and no insurance. She enrolled in Medicaid to cover his care. When he turned three, she enrolled him in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). That program's higher income eligibility allowed her to begin working. Today her family has private health insurance through her employer. In 2007, Kathy testified before Congress to support the reauthorization of CHIP. Kathy shared her story again in 2009 and was there when the House of Representatives passed the bill. President Obama signed CHIP reauthorization into law on February 4, 2009.
