The Late Dr. Violet T. Lewis, founder/organizer of the March of Dimes Fashion Extravagnza Committee, formerly organized the Committee with 11 women whom she called together to hear the challenge extended to her by Mr. Don Baron, who was the director of the region's office of the National Foundation (this included Detroit) in August 1952.
After listening to the message, the group agreed to share the challenge and give their support to Dr. Lewis as coordinator of the entire event. Mr. Don Barton promised Dr. Lewis that Mrs. Anne Campbell Stark, who was chair of the March of Dimes Mother's March, would assist her in securing clothes from the leading women's department stores for the show.
The first general chairperson was Mrs. Pearl Harris, who was President of the Detroit Association of Women's Clubs, Inc. The first general committee meeting was held in September 1952 where plans were made to have the first Fashion Extravaganza at the Latin Quarter in Detroit in 1953. There were hats ladened with dimes and dropped into the wishing well.
