March of Dimes
Each year more than 30,000 babies don’t reach their first birthday. Imagine the heartache and impact of just one baby in your own world not seeing that single candle on their first cake and then multiply that by 30,000. 1 in 8 babies right here in Worcester are born premature. Prematurity is the leading cause of infant death. The money you raise for the 2014 March of Dimes Worcester Golf Outing will provide research to help us fight prematurity. We need your help and so do the babies!
Dr. Francis Bednarek (July 29, 1944 to July 15, 2013), was the co-founder and co-chief of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UMass Memorial. Established in 1975 and under the guidance of Dr. Bednarek and Dr. Griffin, the original NICU, comprised of 8 neonatal beds housed at Memorial Hospital, grew to a state-of-the-art 49 bed level 3 NICU, serving all of central Massachusetts and northeastern Connecticut. In addition, the Dr. Bednarek also assisted in the establishment of the level 2 NICU at St. Vincent Hospital.
For nearly 40 years, Dr. Bednarek was a fixture not only in the regional medical community, but well known nationally for his research work on a multitude of newborn medicine topics resulting in authorship or collaboration on greater than 100 academic papers.
Dr. Bednarek was an active supporter, board member, and volunteer of the March of Dimes, where he had over 15 years of service. Aside from his numerous volunteer activities, he was a charter member of the Central Massachusetts Division Board, serving as Vice Chair from 2012 to 2013. He was influential in supporting the UMass NICU Reunions at the Worcester March for Babies events.
