Safe sleep: what’s true and what’s not

June 16, 2026

Each year in the United States, about 3,500 babies die suddenly and unexpectedly during sleep. Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is a term that covers many types of these deaths in babies before their first birthday, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year old—sometimes called crib death because it often happens during sleep. The good news is that following safe sleep guidelines can greatly reduce the risk. Here’s what you need to know.

How can I protect my baby during sleep?

The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a bassinet or crib, on their back, on a firm, flat, non-inclined surface. If you have multiples (twins, triplets or more) each baby should have their own sleep space. Room sharing with your baby is recommended, but not bed sharing.

Some products marketed for infant sleep are not safe, and some are federally banned. If you have an inclined sleeper or rocker at home, stop using it for sleep and check cpsc.gov for current recall information.

What about things I’ve heard from my family or online?

There’s a lot of information out there about infant sleep, including family, traditions, cultural beliefs, and even social media. Some of it is accurate, but some of it isn’t. The best thing to do is to talk to your baby’s healthcare provider if you have any doubts or worries. They can help you sort through what you’ve heard and answer questions specific to your baby.

If access to care is a barrier, your local WIC office or health department can help connect you to resources near you.

Who else should know about safe sleep?

Safe sleep guidelines apply every time your baby sleeps. This includes naps and when someone else is caring for your baby. Grandparents, babysitters, childcare providers, and other caregivers should know the basics. Sharing this information with everyone in your baby’s life is one of the most important things you can do.
