Childbirth is life-changing, and recovery can take time. For women who experience severe maternal morbidity (SMM)–life-threatening conditions like severe bleeding, infections, or organ failure–the process can feel even more overwhelming. For moms who had unexpected and serious birth complications, the healing process can feel even more overwhelming. But with the right care and support, it’s possible to rebuild strength, both physically and emotionally, and feel more confident as you recover.
Why understanding SMM can help your healing
Each year, more than 50,000 women experience SMM. Studies show they’re also twice as likely to return to the hospital within six weeks of giving birth compared to those who didn’t experience SMM. Serious complications like heavy bleeding, high blood pressure (preeclampsia), infections, or blood clots can bring so many feelings. It’s not unusual to feel sadness, worry, or stress as you recover and make sense of what happened. Understanding these challenges is the first step in getting the care and support you need.
Supporting Your Recovery
Recovering from SMM is a personal journey, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Here are a few steps that may help:
- Don’t skip your postpartum visit. This is an important part of your care and healing after birth. If you had SMM, the timing of your postpartum visit might be different than you expected. A lot depends on what type of health complication you had. You may need more than one visit, so be sure to speak to your prenatal provider about what’s best and what you need.
- Work with a care team. Moms who experience SMM may have a higher risk for long-term health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. Working with specialists can help you manage these risks and stay proactive about your long-term health.
- Take care of your mental health: Healing isn’t just physical. If you feel sadness, anxiety, or disconnected after your birth experience, tell your healthcare provider right away. Talking with a mental health provider can help you process these emotions and start feeling like yourself again. Postpartum Support International’s Helpline (1-800-944-4773) offers support and can connect you with local resources.
Why Postpartum Care Matters
There’s no “right” way to recover after SMM, but putting your physical, emotional, and mental health first can help you regain strength and confidence over time. Caring for yourself is just as important as caring for your baby. You deserve the support and resources you need for a full recovery.
