Arlington, VA, December 30, 2024 - It is with deep sorrow that we join the nation in mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter, a visionary leader and tireless advocate for maternal and infant health.
President Carter’s dedication to improving the lives of moms and babies began long before his presidency. As Governor of Georgia, he signed into law the creation of the nation’s first state council on maternal and infant care, a groundbreaking initiative that set the stage for improved health outcomes for families across the state. As a volunteer Chairman of the March of Dimes Georgia Chapter, he brought his compassion and unwavering commitment to advance our mission, championing programs that would leave a lasting impact on maternal and infant healthcare.
In his own words, President Carter once described the transformative impact of March of Dimes: “In every community of this country, the March of Dimes has initiated educational and medical service programs to protect the unborn and the newborn. It has increased the availability of prenatal care, started and supported programs to improve maternal nutrition, created a nationwide group of genetic centers and established and assisted newborn intensive care units.”
We cherish the memory of President Carter meeting with our National Poster Children, including Betsy Burch, Robbie Zastavny, and Melanie Brockington. These visits highlighted his unwavering commitment to our mission and his dedication to improving lives. President Carter’s legacy is reflected in the countless families who have benefited from his leadership and advocacy. His support for March of Dimes exemplified his commitment to creating a healthy future for all.
On behalf of the entire March of Dimes family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Carter family. We will honor President Carter’s extraordinary life by continuing the work to ensure that every mom and baby has the best possible start.
