Budget Resolution and Proposed Medicaid Cuts

March of Dimes Statement on Congressional Advancement of Budget Resolution and Proposed Medicaid Cuts

Today, the House of Representatives approved the Senate’s amended budget resolution—bringing us one step closer to enacting sweeping cuts to Medicaid that would impact millions of Americans. The budget resolution passed by both chambers instructs the House Energy and Commerce Committee to identify approximately $880 billion in spending reductions over the next decade, with the bulk of those cuts expected to target Medicaid.

If enacted, these changes would jeopardize the health and well-being of nearly 80 million people who rely on Medicaid, including pregnant women, babies, and children. These potential cuts would dramatically shrink eligibility, eliminate covered services, and erect new barriers to care—robbing families of critical prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric services at a time when the United States is already grappling with an alarming maternal and infant health crisis.

Cindy Rahman, President and CEO of March of Dimes, issued the following statement:

“March of Dimes strongly opposes the budget resolution advancing through Congress, which would lead to harmful changes to Medicaid and threaten the health and well-being of millions of moms and babies. These irresponsible budget directives come at a time when the US remains the most dangerous high-income country to give birth—a crisis that demands more investment in care, not less.

Medicaid is a lifeline, providing essential health coverage to nearly 1.5 million women and babies and covering over 41% of all US births. It ensures access to prenatal visits, postpartum support, and newborn care that prevent complications and save lives.

Slashing Medicaid funding would be a devastating step backward, undoing decades of progress and disproportionately harming the most vulnerable families in our country. This is not just a policy debate—it’s a matter of life and death.

We urge every Member of Congress to protect Medicaid and prioritize the health of moms and babies. Making sure every mom can access quality care and every baby has a healthy start must be a national priority.”

We cannot afford to wait. Speak out. Protect Medicaid. Visit marchofdimes.org to learn more and take action today. Help us ensure that families everywhere can access the care they need and deserve.
