Data updates on PeriStats

PeriStats has been updated with the most current data on several indicators associated with poor birth outcomes. These include an update to health insurance status, poverty status, and several behavioral risk factors such as smoking in women and men, binge alcohol use, and obesity.

PeriStats has been updated with 2017 health insurance coverage data for women (15-44 years) and children (18 years and younger) for the US and by state. The updated data are from the American Community Survey (ACS), an annual survey of the U.S. Census. PeriStats presents the percent of women and children who do not have any health insurance coverage. A respondent was considered uninsured if they were not covered by any type of health insurance at the time of the survey.

Data on poverty status among women and children living for each state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. is now available for single years 2011-2018. Poverty is defined as those who make less than 100% of the poverty threshold established by the US Census Bureau. The poverty threshold for a family of three was $20,780 in 2018. The updated data are from The Current Population Survey (CPS) which is sponsored by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Data are available for the percent of women (15-44 years) and percent of children (18 years and younger) living in poverty.

Data for health insurance and poverty were retrieved from the IPUMS.org, Minnesota Population Center at the University of Minnesota. The health insurance data was retrieved from IPUMS-USA (ACS) and poverty data is from IPUMS-CPS.

Additionally, PeriStats has been updated with 2017 Behavioral Risk Surveillance System (BRFSS) data. The BRFSS is a nationally representative telephone survey which annually collects information on health risk behaviors from all 50 states, territories and the District of Columbia.

The topics updated include

  • Smoking in women (18-44 years)
  • Smoking in men (18 years and older)
  • Binge alcohol drinking in women (18-44 years)
  • Obesity in women (18-44 years)

The Prematurity Profiles for each state have been updated with the most current statistics. These can be easily accessed through the State Summaries tool in the upper right corner of the PeriStats main page.
