1. In 2017, the United States infant mortality rate (5.8 per 1,000 live births) ranked 32 among selected countries.
2. The United States infant mortality rate was more than 3 times as high as the infant mortality rate in Japan (1.9 per 1,000 live births), the country with the lowest reported rate in 2017.
3. Rankings are from lowest to highest IMR. Countries with the same IMR receive the same rank. Some of the international variation in infant mortality rates is due to variations among countries in registering practices for premature infants.
