Lubbock Perinatal Coalition to Unveil “Baby Bus”

    Lubbock, Texas, June 14, 2013 —

On Friday, June 14, from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Kmart, 6501 University, the March of Dimes, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, Stork’s Nest and other members of the Lubbock Perinatal Coalition will be unveiling a Citibus wrapped with the message, “If your pregnancy is healthy wait for labor to begin on its own.”   The bus is part of a campaign to educate the public on the importance of not scheduling elective inductions and c-sections.  The Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait® campaign urges women with healthy pregnancies to wait for labor to begin on its own.  It’s best to wait until 39-40 weeks gestation.

“We know that sometimes it’s necessary to deliver a baby early for medical reasons, or sometimes preterm labor happens and can’t be stopped, but what we want people to realize when they see the message on this bus is that it’s important not to schedule a baby’s delivery for convenience,” said Amy Johnson-Rubio, Director of Program Services for the March of Dimes.  “Babies born even a couple of weeks too soon can have problems."

The bus will also be a part of the 11th Annual Stork’s Nest Baby Shower on July 20, from 10:00-2:00 at Kmart. The community will be invited to come “Fill the Baby Bus” with baby items to benefit Stork’s Nest clients.  Stork’s Nest is a local program that helps women access early and consistent prenatal care and comprehensive education about how to have the healthiest baby possible.
