March of Dimes Seeking Family Teams to Help Celebrate 75th Anniversary
Greenville, South Carolina, September 05, 2013
The March of Dimes invites families from all Upstate Counties to help celebrate their 75th Anniversary by joining WonderWalk as a Family Team. WonderWalk will take place on October 8th at the Greenville Zoo from 9am-11am. WonderWalk gives students a chance to raise money to help the March of Dimes give all babies a healthier start. It is appropriate for children in Preschool through Second Grade and Special Education Classes. By participating in WonderWalk, children learn about the value of volunteering by establishing a positive attitude toward community service early on and the importance of one person in support of a greater goal. WonderWalk Family Teams are made up of family members and friends who have had a personal experience with premature birth, birth defects, or infant mortality.
“Family teams are the face of the March of Dimes and bring to life the March of Dimes mission and why it is so important to raise awareness and funds to support vital research that will help prevent premature birth” said Cindy Henderson, Chair, Simpsonville United Methodist Church Preschool. “We hope many families will join us this year and together we will take steps for healthier babies in our community and across the state”
Premature birth touches half a million babies and their families every year including nearly 9,000 babies in South Carolina each year. Babies born too soon struggle to survive and may have lifelong health consequences. The March of Dimes is committed to funding research to find the answers to premature birth and funding local programs to educate healthcare providers and moms-to-be.
Families are encouraged to register and start their team online by visiting marchforbabies.org or by calling 864-551-2643.
WonderWalk is a March of Dimes premier fundraising event that benefits all babies—those born healthy as well as those who need help to survive and thrive. In Greenville, WonderWalk will take place on October 8th at 9am at the Greenville Zoo. Funds raised by this March for Babies event also support research and grants awarded to programs that improve infant and maternal health in South Carolina.
WonderWalk is sponsored locally by Wal-Mart, Pet Dairy and Tru Moo, and Upstate Parent Magazine.
March for Babies is sponsored nationally by the March of Dimes number one corporate supporter Kmart, Farmers Insurance Group, Macy’s, Cigna, Sanofi Pasteur, Famous Footwear, Actavis, Mission Pharmacal, and United Airlines.
In 2013, the March of Dimes celebrates its 75th Anniversary and its ongoing work to help babies get a healthy start in life. Early research led to the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines that all babies still receive. Other breakthroughs include new treatments for premature infants and children with birth defects.
