MCH Programs

PeriStats provides state-specific data for two federally-sponsored maternal and child health programs: Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and Title V.

WIC is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, state health departments, city and county health departments and community health clinics. The program serves low-income women, infants and children who are nutritionally at risk.

Title V of the Social Security Act has authorized the Maternal and Child Health Services Program since 1935, and it is a major source of state funds for women of childbearing age, infants and children with special health care needs. Title V consists of block grants to state health agencies on the basis of specified formulas, and discretionary grants referred to as Special Projects of Regional and National Significance.
