• In 2013, 67.8% of infant deaths occurred in the neonatal period, and 32.2% occurred in the postneonatal period.
• Neonatal and postneonatal mortality are examined separately because most deaths during the neonatal period are associated with events surrounding the prenatal period and the delivery, whereas postneonatal deaths are more likely to be associated with conditions or events that arise after the delivery and may reflect environmental factors.

Footnotes

  • A neonatal death occurs from birth through 27 days of life.
  • A postneonatal death occurs from 28 days to under one year of life.
