• Maternal age is a risk factor for low birthweight, with higher low birthweight rates found among the youngest and oldest mothers in the U.S. 
• In New York City during 2011-2013 (average), low birthweight rates were highest for women ages 40 and older (12.1%) and under age 20 (10.2%) . 
• Of all infants born during 2011-2013 (average), 4.8% were to mothers under the age of 20, 44.5% were to mothers ages 20-29 years, 45.6% were to mothers ages 30-39 years, and 5.1% were to mothers ages 40 and older.
