Representative Charles Jeter on the March of Dimes
Raleigh, North Carolina, May 03, 2013
“There is no better way to help our society than to help our children start out with as few obstacles as possible. We have an opportunity to make sure people aren’t born with birth defects… if that doesn’t make you want to walk; I question why you’d want to do anything.”- Representative Charles Jeter.
Did you know Mecklenburg County Representative Charles Jeter attributes much of his success to the March of Dimes? In 1973 Jeter was born with a cleft lip and palate. Options were few and far between concerning his birth defect in the 70’s. “My parents consulted the March of Dimes before making a decision concerning my treatment," he said. From 6 weeks old to 23, Jeter has undergone more than 25 surgeries. But today, he is a successful businessman, devoted legislator, father and husband.
“The birth defect didn’t define me; it made me who I am. I wouldn’t be as comfortable in my own skin if not for the defect,” said Jeter.
Jeter is a huge supporter of the March of Dimes inside and outside of the state legislature. “March of Dimes isn’t saving lives, it’s giving lives,” he said. “Make no mistake; had I not had this birth defect, had the March of Dimes not been so instrumental in our lives, I wouldn’t sit in the chamber today. It’s made people better than they would have been.”
