A Mother’s Gift – From me to me with love…

    Raleigh, North Carolina, May 12, 2013 —

As the official sponsor of Mother’s Day, we at the March of Dimes take today and every day to salute mothers across the world. We honor you for your passion, dedication and commitment to stronger, healthier babies everywhere. With that being said, we charged Nikki Fleming, Speakers Bureau Co-Chair, Mother of a preemie and former National March of Dimes Ambassador Family to write a letter to herself… knowing what she knows now about prematurity, if she could go back in time and tell herself anything, this is what she would have said… enjoy.

A Mother’s Gift – From me to me with love…

There are countless things that I could tell you about being the mother of a preemie, but you won’t possibly know until....you know. There are seven points of wisdom that I want you to carry along on your special journey that will serve as a guide as you travel this very unpredictable, challenging, yet rewarding path. You will become a new you, but the true gift is not in the outcome, it is in the process.

Faith – More than anything, you will need faith to carry you through those difficult times and extremely dark moments. Some things you will never have the answer to and you will just have to trust that a larger purpose has been designed for you. Trust and know, greatness is in store and you will get through this, but you MUST believe.

Patience – There are going to be moments that truly test your patience, but you will be growing in the process. Don’t examine the length of time, but examine what occurs in that time. So much goodness is coming to you and the longer you wait, the better it will be. You can’t control time so just be still and watch God move.

Strength – Weakness is not an option for you, although at times you will want to be. Your daughter will be counting on you to be strong for her and she will draw from your strength. Because you are strong, she will be strong too and there is no compromise for that. Strength and weakness are always choices so you must decide.

Purpose – Realizing that there is a broader meaning for your journey will give life and value to your struggle. Knowing that this is not about you, but rather for you, will carry you much farther in God’s will. God desires to use you in ways that you couldn’t imagine possible and you must see the meaning and become one with it. (See Faith)

Gratitude – It’s one of the gifts that we can actually give to God. Be grateful for this journey and be blessed in it because it will change your life forever. This experience chose you and that alone is a blessing. Doors will open for you that have never been opened before and favor will pour over your life in ways that you have never seen before – all because you accepted this call with gratitude.

Servitude – Everything that you are and everything that you go through is designed to serve others.  Remember that service is the greatest gift that you can give to someone else and it is always honored by God. No struggle is easy, but the rewards are priceless – remembering that to whom much is given, much is required.

Humility – Above all, remain humble throughout your entire journey. Your trials will be met with blessings and those blessings must be received with a humble heart. Your little 2lb 1 oz. adoring baby girl will teach you a lot about humility, but then again this entire experience will too. I hope that you will take it all in with love knowing that God desires the very best for you. His love is matchless and His gifts are without repentance. The amazing woman on the other side already knows about you – such a beautiful gift you’ll both be given and she can’t wait for you to meet her too…xoxo
