Macy’s and Its Customers Show Their Generosity, Raising More Than $3.3 Million to Benefit March of Dimes Mission for Healthy Babies

September 13, 2011

Macy’s stores and customers have given generously to March of Dimes programs in communities nationwide by raising more than $3.3 million in donations for moms and babies.

This year, the March of Dimes was the exclusive national in-store beneficiary of Macy’s annual Shop for a Cause program, which gave shoppers the chance to support the mission for healthy babies while saving money. The funds raised will support March of Dimes programs to help prevent serious infant health problems such as birth defects and premature birth, the number one cause of newborn death in the United States and a leading cause of disabilities.

Macy’s Shop for a Cause provided customers with 25 percent off most regular, sale and clearance purchases after buying a $5 shopping pass they could use online or in store on August 27 and due to hurricane Irene again in select stores on September 3. Macy’s Shop for a Cause charity shopping event has raised more than $40 million for charities across the country since 2006.

“We are thrilled to support March of Dimes in such a big way through our Shop for a Cause program this year,” said Martine Reardon, Macy’s executive vice president of marketing. “Our customers had a great time shopping during this event, knowing that their participation will help further the mission for healthier babies in communities across the country.”

The funds raised will help prevent serious infant health problems such as birth defects and premature birth, the number one cause of newborn death in the United States and a leading cause of disabilities.

“We are thankful to Macy’s for naming the March of Dimes its sole national beneficiary of its Shop for a Cause program,” said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes. “It shows how much Macy’s and their customers care about the health of moms and babies. We applaud everyone who participated in Shop for Cause and made it such a great success.”
