Capital Health And March Of Dimes Celebrate NICU Reunion

    Sayreville, New Jersey, March 20, 2013 —

Despite the late mid-March snow, Capital Health’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) hosted a fun filled day at Sesame Place on Saturday March 16, 2013 reuniting families and children who have benefited from the March of Dimes funded NICU Family Support Program. Over 300 people, doctors, nurses, and families of children who were taken care of in the Capital Health NICU gathered to celebrate the success of the NICU.

“My family and I had a wonderful time at Sesame Place with the March of Dimes.  It was great to be able to see all the nurses and doctors who helped to get not only my daughter through a very difficult time, but me and my husband as well.  It was like visiting with long lost family and we are so grateful to be able to have the chance to do this.  Thanks!” said Maria Coughi, mother of a NICU graduate.

Over 400 babies are cared for at Capital Health Regional Medical Center and Capital Health Medical Center-Hopewell NICUs every year.  There are many successes that come out of the NICU.  This reunion offered the families a chance to celebrate their baby’s progress and for the NICU staff to catch-up with the families.

“It was great seeing so many families and seeing the babies I took care of all grown up!  I love when the parents say:  this is who taught me how to take care of you!” said Val Lush, Capital Health nurse.

The NICU graduates and their families enjoyed snacks and a special March of Dimes 75th Anniversary birthday cake at Sesame Place, and were then treated to the Elmo’s World Live Show. The Sunny Day carousel was open for rides; afterwards the children had meet and greets with many of the Sesame characters and received temporary tattoos from the Council Rock South’s March of Dimes club. Families also registered to participate in March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ premier fundraising event, in April.

“Despite the snowy weather, over 100 families attended the NICU Reunion at Sesame Place.  The children loved meeting the characters and the parents always enjoy showing off their NICU graduates to the staff and doctors,” said Christine Keppel, March of Dimes NICU Family Support Specialist.

The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
