    2013 March for Babies Results

    Thousands march for healthy babies!

    St. Paul, MN, April 29, 2013 —

Sunshine and warm weather welcomed more than 6,000 people walking together for stronger, healthier babies at Minneapolis/St. Paul March for Babies Sunday, April 28. Como Park was host to strollers, families and corporate teams who raised $1.5 million statewide to help babies be born healthy. Additional March for Babies events were held in 15 Minnesota communities including Duluth, Mankato, Rochester and St. Cloud with a total of more than 10,000 moms, dads, babies, friends and co-workers marching for healthy babies.

Special guests at the March for Babies included the great-granddaughter of March of Dimes founder President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Liz Roosevelt inspired the crowd by celebrating the 75th anniversary of the March of Dimes. Approximately 4 million babies were born in the United States last year and the March of Dimes helped each and every one through 75 years of research, vaccines, education and breakthroughs. Governor Mark Dayton declared Sunday, April 28 “March of Dimes Day” in Minnesota in recognition of the organization’s lifesaving achievements.

Two Twin Cities families shared their personal stories of prematurity and loss. Mike and Cyndy Guille celebrated the journey their daughter Gertie took from her birth four months too soon through the 133 days in the newborn intensive care unit to the smiling, happy 21-month old who will soon be a big sister.

Scott and Amanda Hedin told the crowd about the complications that forced their twin girls to be born 12 weeks premature. Daughter Eden lived just eight months. Her sister Reagan is now 2 ½.

Fairview Health Services filled the event with a sea of teal shirts as the number one team at the March for Babies. Other big teams included Allina Health, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics, Cigna, Farmers Insurance and our 75th anniversary partner Medica. Lawrence Massa, President and CEO of the Minnesota Hospital Association, served as the state chair of the 2013 March for Babies.

Money raised by the event funds research, education and local community grants for programs such as the NICU Family Support program at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital. NICU Family Support provides information and comfort to families with an infant in the newborn intensive care unit. NICU Family Support opened at the U of M Amplatz Children’s Hospital in March of this year. It is the second site in Minnesota. The first opened at St. Cloud Hospital in 2006.

This year, the March of Dimes, the leading non-profit organization for maternal and infant health, celebrates its 75th anniversary and its ongoing work to help all babies get a healthy start in life. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes works to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
