March of Dimes Program Helped Them 4 years ago. Now They Help Others as Volunteers
Beck Family part of NICU Family Support Program funded in part by March for Babies
In 2010, Jim and Robin Beck did not expect their baby to be born at 31 weeks. Evan was tiny, sick and struggling to survive. Thankfully, March of Dimes was there for Evan and to meet them in the NICU to help guide them through the next two months as they watched and waited and hoped for their son’s survival.
The March of Dimes helps babies like Evan survive by researching new treatments for the complications of premature birth like surfactant therapy, nitric oxide therapy and more. But March of Dimes is also there for families with its NICU Family Support Program. The program has been in place at Riley Hospital NICU at Methodist Hospital for close to a decade and has helped hundreds of parents and families deal with the unexpected birth of a critically ill baby.
“The NICU family support program was such an important part of our journey with Evan, says Robin Beck, Evan’s Mother. “From the bedside conversations to the parent/sibling hours – our family enjoyed the support and interaction. At the time, big brother was just five years old and I spent 9 weeks in the hospital on bed rest so those moments we were able to share making crafts, etc. were so precious to me.”
Today, families with critically ill babies in the Riley NICU at Methodist get that same Family Centered care from March of Dimes and the Beck family. “I volunteer with the March of Dimes because I want to give back and also give other parents hope and encouragement for their babies,” continued Beck. “We were so touched by all the support that we decided what better time to get involved than the present……Evan was still in the NICU and we thought our story would be close to everyone's heart. We raised over $1000 in less than a week's time.
March for Babies provides over 65% of the critical funding needed for its research and community programs like NICU Family Support. March for Babies in Indianapolis is May 10th with registration at 9am and the walk start at 10am at White River State Park. There is still time to join the Beck family and walk in March for Babies.
