Show Your Love Campaign Highlights Importance of Healthy Habits Before Pregnancy

Becoming Healthy Before Pregnancy Benefits Moms and Babies

    Chicago, IL, February 15, 2013 —

Most Illinois women take care of everything and everyone around them first before themselves. But in honor of Valentine’s Day, the March of Dimes Illinois Chapter asked women take a moment to care about you -- and your health.

On Valentine’s Day 2013, Show Your Love, a new national public awareness campaign, launched to help women take steps now to protect their health and the health of the family they may want to have some time in the future. Developed by the Preconception Health and Health Care Initiative (PCHHCI), in partnership with the March of Dimes, Show Your Love reminds women of childbearing age to love themselves by practicing healthy habits. Habits can include eating right, taking a daily multivitamin with folic acid, getting exercise at least three times a week and sticking to a plan – either having children in the near future or waiting awhile and using a form of birth control.

The Illinois Chapter of the March of Dimes is pleased to be a part of this important effort because Show Your Love aligns with one of three core priorities the chapter is focusing on the next three years: preconception and interconception care. Preconception health refers to a woman’s health prior to becoming pregnant, and interconception health is the woman’s condition and care between pregnancies.

The Illinois Chapter’s overall goal in focusing on preconception and interconception is to reduce Illinois’ preterm birth rate to no more than 11 percent by 2015. According to the Centers for Disease Control, women who improve their health before pregnancy can be healthier mothers and have healthier babies. Healthier women have less chance of having other problems with pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes, miscarriage, or preterm labor. Their babies have less chance for problems, such as preterm birth, low birth weight, high birth weight, or stillbirth.

From now through May, the public is invited to join the campaign. For more information on the Show Your Love campaign visit the website at http://www.cdc.gov/preconception/showyourlove/. Use #SYLToday on Twitter as well. You can follow the IL Chapter on Facebook at facebook.com/modillinois and on Twitter @ILMarchofDimes.

The Show Your Love campaign includes a series of educational materials including posters, checklists, and e-cards, which are free of charge and available at: http://www.cdc.gov/preconception/showyourlove/
