DesignAbility® matches skilled volunteers with consumers facing unique barriers in order to create or modify devices to increase independence.
CONSUMERS – if you or someone you know has a physical disability and needs a solution or modification to a device that cannot be found on the market, then make a request to our talented DesignAbility volunteers. There is no charge for the work they do except the expense of the materials involved. These creative solutions can help you or your child or someone you know overcome a barrier to work, play or personal care and performing daily activities. Here is what you need to do.
- Fill out a request for assistance form DesignAbility® Request for Assistance form Fax to 416 425 1920 or mail it to 10 Overlea Blvd, Toronto, ON. M4H 1A4.
- A volunteer will contact you to arrange a meeting
- Participate in designing a solution that will work for you

March of Dimes is looking for volunteers who have skills in wood, metal, or plastic fabrication or knowledge about assistives devices. As a DesignAblility volunteer, you have the opportunity to work in a group, with a partner, or one on one with a consumer who has requested assistance.
Please read below to see what's involved in becoming a DesignAbility volunteer:
- Join a local chapter or start your own
- R
eceive requests for assistance from your area
arrange to meet the consumer on your own or with another volunteer and preferably with an Occupational Therapist
design and construct or modify a device
deliver to customer and adjust if necessary
document your activities and submit expenses to client or March of Dimes
