Launched in 2003 in memory of Jeannette Shannon, the Post-Polio Program Volunteer Award recognizes that rare individual whose involvement in the Post Polio Program best replicates Jeannette’s extraordinary dedication and outstanding and diverse contributions.
For more than two decades, Jeannette Shannon engrossed herself in the issues, both medical and social, affecting people experiencing post-polio syndrome. A polio survivor herself, she tirelessly advocated for the rights of people with disabilities, and encouraged research and a wider understanding of their special needs.
Provincial Post-Polio Committee Chair for over 10 years, Jeannette’s “can do attitude” was nothing short of inspiring, earning her the nickname “Mrs. March of Dimes.” Her contributions and leadership were recognized nationally in 2002 when she was named recipient of the “March of Dimes Canada Award.”

Eligibility Criteria
Any post-polio chapter volunteer member who has:
- contributed at least eight years of volunteer service to Ontario March of Dimes;
- demonstrated leadership at either the chapter, provincial, national, or international level;
- been active in advocacy on behalf of people with PPS or the late effects of poliomyelitis;
- participated in peer counselling support to individuals or families;
advanced and promoted awareness of PPS and PPS issues to health and allied professionals, caregivers, or the public;
- encouraged research into PPS or related issues.
