Lorne and Helen Dueck

Lorne and Helen Dueck are OMOD champions of the Recreation Program. Lorne has Multiple Sclerosis and as a retired businessman, along with his wife Helen, volunteers locally to support several charitable organizations, one of which is Ontario March of Dimes.

As a youngster in Western Canada, Lorne will tell you that his family had no extra cash and that times were hard. Lorne recalls wishing his family could afford to send him to summer camp, as it was an experience that he longed for.

When he was just 12 years old in Winnipeg (Manitoba) Lorne remembers that a kind person in his community paid his registration fees for camp. He still remembers what a great experience that was, and it was only made possible by the generosity of this thoughtful person.

Lorne says he felt privileged, and thoroughly enjoyed that experience at camp. The camaraderie, outdoor activities, leadership skills and teamwork that he experienced during that summer adventure were irreplaceable in his mind. He feels that this experience helped to positively shape his development and he is eternally grateful to the kind sponsor who made it possible for him to go to camp.

The generosity of a stranger helped Lorne as a youngster. That's why Lorne feels so strongly about supporting the OMOD camping program and making this recreational opportunity possible for people who may not be able to afford the fees on their own.

Last year, and this year, Lorne and Helen made donations that enabled a number of campers to participate in the summer camping experience. While OMOD only asks campers to pay a fee of $620, it costs about $2600 per camper to provide this recreation experience.

We hope that you will join Lorne and Helen in supporting the Ontario March of Dimes' Camping Program with a donation. These summer holiday experiences enhance the quality of life for people with physical disabilities through recreational activities, friendship opportunities and social integration.
