Dieter Wolff was more than a volunteer and outstanding door-to-door canvasser for March of Dimes – he was also a valued friend. An avid photographer and sportsman who maintained a lifelong passion for tennis and golf, Dieter Wolff passed away on May 26th, 2008. He was 77 years old.

For close to ten years Dieter braved the cold January weather to raise money for March of Dimes through its annual Door-to-Door Campaign. No ordinary canvasser, Dieter developed his own unique approach to collecting donations.

When he knocked on his neighbours’ doors, he was equipped not only with personalized marketing materials he prepared himself, but also with a detailed record of the home’s past gifts.

Before the campaign even started, Dieter left an information package in the mailbox of each house he planned to canvass, including a letter of introduction, background details on March of Dimes and a photo of himself.

Dieter believed that doing a little work prior to the campaign made people more receptive when he came to their doors in January.

Dieter’s hard work and perseverance certainly paid off. In his first year with the Door-to-Door Campaign, he canvassed 22 homes and raised over $300. In the 2008 campaign, Dieter, along with a dedicated team of neighbourhood volunteers, went to over 300 homes and raised close to $7,000. For the past three years, he was the most successful individual canvasser in the province.

“Dieter was more than just an exceptional canvasser,” says Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications. “He was extraordinarily generous with his skills, efforts and time – and has made a significant difference in the lives of Canadians with disabilities. He was a true gentleman and he will be dearly missed.”

We need more people like Dieter Wolff, who is generous with both his skills and his time.
