Meet the 2012 Elm City Legends Ambassador Family
New Haven, CT, September 26, 2012
Like most (almost) eight year olds, Alex Jay "AJ" O'Dell-Schilling enjoys bike riding, swings, scooters, and music. But unlike many of his peers, his beginning was not so robust. Born at 24 weeks, weighing just 1 pound, 1 ounce, he experienced multiple bleeds in his head, leading to cerebral palsy and epilepsy. AJ had a 4 month stay in the NICU at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his mom, Lori is a Registered Nurse.
“Surfactant and nitric oxide saved AJ's life. Immunizations and Synagis protected his life," says Lori. "While the work of the March of Dimes was very instrumental in saving AJ's life, there is still more work to be done so future generations can have less long-term effects from prematurity."
Now a happy third grader, AJ and his family are fighting for other babies. He and his parents, Lori & Anthony, are honored to serve as the 2012 Ambassadors for the Greater New Haven March for Babies and the 5th Annual Elm City Legends.
Elm City Legends will be held at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven on November 15 from 5:30-8:30. Donations may be made in honor of the family to help Fund the Mission of the March of Dimes or tickets to the event may be purchased online.
The March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter thanks the O’Dell-Schilling family for their support and dedication.
