New fact sheets offer guidance to get ready for tornadoes, hurricanes and other emergencies

Washington, D.C., May 5, 2014 --- Just in time for Mother’s Day, the American Public Health Association’s Get Ready campaign and the March of Dimes have partnered to release a series of resources to help pregnant moms and families with infants prepare for emergencies.

The collection of six new fact sheets address specific ways pregnant women and young families can prepare for emergencies such as tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires. A general fact sheet for pregnant women and families with infants is also available in Spanish.

“APHA’s Get Ready campaign works to ensure that individuals, their families and their communities are prepared to face life’s unexpected and unpredictable disasters as safely as possible. Expectant moms and families with infants require special resources and sound guidance to reach that same goal,” said Susan Polan, PhD, associate executive director of APHA. “What better way to honor and celebrate Mother’s Day than helping ensure that new moms and their families are prepared to weather the unexpected.”

The fact sheets identify key ways that preparing for disasters differs for pregnant women and those with young children. Guidance covers signs of preterm labor, which a pregnant woman could experience during or after a disaster; additional items to pack in a disaster preparedness kit for infants or pregnant women; things to keep in mind if a woman goes into labor during an emergency; and much more.

“California accounts for 12 percent of all births nationwide and has experienced many of these natural disasters,” said Karyn DeMartini, March of Dimes California State Director. “The California Chapter of March of Dimes has worked closely with the American Public Health Association’s Get Ready disaster preparedness campaign over the last year to develop these critical fact sheets because as the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health, we wanted to be certain that pregnant women and families with infants have the information they need to be well-informed and safe before and during these natural disasters.”

Fact sheets are available in full on APHA’s Get Ready website [link] and on the March of Dimes website [link]. No permission is required to reprint the fact sheets. The electronic files may be posted on individual websites, social media and in news publications. For more information about permissions regarding the fact sheets, visit http://www.getreadyforflu.org/new_pg_about.htm#permissions.
