March of Dimes Honors Leading California Volunteer with Prestigious National Award

Randy Pond of Cisco Systems is recognized at the March of Dimes Volunteer Leadership Conference with the Elaine Whitelaw Service Award

    San Jose, California, October 04, 2013 —

Statement of Karyn DeMartini, March of Dimes California State Director: "I am thrilled to announce that Randy Pond, EVP of Operations, Processes, and Systems at Cisco Systems in Silicon Valley, has been awarded the March of Dimes Elaine Whitelaw Service Award at the March of Dimes Volunteer Leadership Conference (VLC) last week. Randy is one of our most steadfast volunteers and he has contributed nearly a decade of his leadership, vision, and energy to the March of Dimes."

The Elaine Whitelaw Service Award is the most prestigious award given to March of Dimes volunteers. This is the second consecutive year that a California volunteer has been honored with this award which is open to nominees from all of March of Dimes 51 Chapters a across the country. Last year’s honoree was Dr. Brian Oshiro from Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Given each year to a recipient who exemplifies volunteerism at its best, the award was presented at the March of Dimes annual Volunteer Leadership Conference in Arlington, Virginia. Each year, the Service Award includes a $5,000 grant to the honoree’s home chapter to fund a project chosen by the honoree.

Randy became involved with March of Dimes in 2005 after hearing the story of a Cisco employee who had premature twins, one of whom passed away. Randy also realized that Cisco, a self-insured company, paid $1.5M in health care bills for this particular family.

Here are some of the ways Randy has supported March of Dimes:

March for Babies - Randy single-handedly put leadership in place to build the Cisco March for Babies team from a small family team to a multi-state team that raised more than $1million in 2013 and was a Top 10 National team in 2012. As event Chair, Randy brought in $350,000 in new revenue ($150,000 more than his commitment). Cisco has raised more than $3.25M for March for Babies since 2005.

Volunteer Leadership – As Chair of the March of Dimes South Bay Division board of directors, he has recruited March for Babies chairs for the past several years and has secured meetings with other major organizations in the Bay Area.

Randy also has secured Cisco executives as Chairpersons of our Signature Chefs Auction event in San Jose, helping grow that event to the #6 event in the country, with the third largest "Fund the Mission" income in 2012.

March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at Stanford University’s School of Medicine: Randy recently joined the Capital Committee for this project.

"We are thrilled that Randy has been recognized with this award and are proud to have a California volunteer once again recognized at the March of Dimes National Volunteer Leadership Conference," added DeMartini.
