Newborn Screening Tests Are Saving Lives in California

Newborn Screening Tests  Are Saving Lives in California

Our partners at  Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, California have seen powerful results as a benefit to administering Newborn Screening Tests. The March of Dimes co-sponsored Assembly Bill 1731 (Critical Congenital Heart Disease) went into effect on July 1, 2013.

“March of Dimes has a long history in advocating for newborn screening tests, including being a co-sponsor of the recently enacted AB 1731 to require screening for heart defects here in California,” said March of Dimes California State Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs Justin Garrett.  “These tests truly save lives as has most recently been proven by our friends at St. Joseph Mission Hospital. We’re thrilled that baby Carlee and the Cook Family experienced a successful outcome from her early identification and subsequent heart surgery. The March of Dimes would like to see all babies screened for the recommended health conditions that can be successfully treated if found early. In California, we screen for all 31 of the federally recommended disorders and conditions.”

More information on congenital heart defects and newborn screening can be found on the March of Dimes website.
